Independence Center

"Friends helping friends in recovery"

MISSION STATEMENT

To empower and encourage those who suffer from a mental illness to live active lives in their communities while assured of a safe and supportive environment that provides the opportunity for personal growth through meaningful activities, educational programs, life skills enhancement and interaction with others.

The Independence Center offers a variety of scheduled activities that are intended to provide individuals with both educational opportunities and challenging activities. We feel that through these activities, the individuals' self-esteem will be enhanced while at the same time providing enjoyment to each of their lives. Furthermore, the individuals enjoy challenging crafts as well as interesting outings to better their lives. The Independence Center is a place for people with mental illnesses to gather, share, support, learn and teach. It is a consumer-operated drop-in center and all decisions about operations are made by the Member Advisory Board (MAB). Operating hours are from Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Anyone with a mental illness is eligible to come and become a member. There is no charge for attending the Independence Center activities. The challenges we face are having the needed supplies and funding to continue providing these services.

History

The Center was created in May of 2005 by individuals from the Waco Veterans Administration Hospital and the Heart of Texas Region MHMR Center. These two agencies created a partnership that would enable peer support staff from the VA and the MHMR Center to open the facility utilizing a house located at 2111 Austin Ave. in Waco. The Independence Center celebrated its seventh year anniversary in May 2012.
